How to Request Criminal Records
Start with the free Maryland Judiciary Case Search at casesearch.courts.state.md.us. It covers Circuit Court cases from 1998 and District Court cases from 1989, and you can search any time without charge. Enter a defendant name or case number to get charges, court dates, and final disposition. The case search screenshot below shows the Maryland Judiciary portal that covers Prince George's County criminal court records alongside every other Maryland county and city court.
Once you locate the case in the online portal, you can request official copies or review the physical file through the Criminal Department at Room 1308 or by mail.
In-person requests go to Room 1308 at the courthouse at 14735 Main Street. Provide the case number or the defendant's name and show a valid photo ID. Payment is accepted in cash, check, money order, or by credit card. For cases that are not immediately at the counter, staff may need to pull the file from Central Files. Cases from 1977 onward are in the system, but older cases require more lead time.
Mail requests go to: Attn: Criminal Division, 14735 Main Street, Upper Marlboro MD 20772. Include the defendant's name, case number, the documents you need, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and payment. General email inquiries can go to clerkpgcourt@mdcourts.gov or to Clerk El Amin directly at mahasin.elamin@mdcourts.gov.
What Criminal Court Records Contain
Prince George's County Circuit Court holds criminal records for all felony cases filed in the county, cases where the defendant demanded a jury trial at the District Court level, and all appeals from the lower court. A typical case file includes the charging document or grand jury indictment, bond paperwork, pleadings and motions from both sides, court orders, sentencing orders, and probation records. Warrants issued during the case are also part of the permanent record. Cases that went to trial may have transcripts available if they were ordered from the court reporter.
Prince George's County operates several specialized court programs whose records are also held by the Circuit Court. The Adult Drug Court handles cases where substance abuse treatment is part of the sentence structure. The Juvenile Drug Court, Truancy Court, Veterans Court, and Re-Entry Court each maintain their own dockets within the Circuit Court system. The Back on Track program serves first-time offenders and its records are accessible at the clerk's office in the same way as standard felony cases.
Restricted records include sealed cases, which require a court order to view, and juvenile proceedings, which are confidential. If you search the public portal and cannot find a case you expected to see, it may have been expunged, sealed, or the case may be under a restricted program designation.
Copy Fees
Standard copies are $0.50 per page. Certified copies start at $5.00 plus $0.50 per page for the document itself. Payment is accepted in cash, check, money order, or credit card at the Criminal Department counter. For mail requests, use a check or money order made payable to Clerk of Circuit Court. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope so your copies can be returned by mail.
